Targeted Activities
To Carry out awareness creation and sensitisation campaigns to inform the public on the need and importance of improved agriculture education and empowerment of the widows, vulnerable children especially among women, youth and the vulnerable in the community.
To identify, counsel and provide care for the widows and out-of-school children as well as Orphans and Vulnerable Children in the communities.
To combat the rate of out of school children and the concomitant consequences including HIV/AIDS, pre-marital sex, unwanted pregnancies, abortion, premature delivery through prevention and control programmes targeted especially at poorly educated women, men and youth among communities.
To accommodate and provide sound education to less privilege.
To periodically organise seminars, conferences, workshops, public lectures, education, cultural and social activities in order to promote life long, education, orientation, and learning and cross sharing of ideas and information amongst people.
To promote positive response to gender issues for the empowerment of women.
Activities so far implemented
DHI has over some time now working on Education in Makurdi LGA but on a small scale, about 28 drop out and orphans and vulnerable children are presently enrolled and are been served by DHI. The aim is to ensure that the rights of the orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are protected and their basic needs are provided. DHI within this period has been able to record the following achievements;
Training of 20 widows on Agricultural activities, skill acquisition and alternative trades. As a result of this programme, at least 8 of the widows that benefited from this programme have adopted alternative trades and are doing well.
Awareness creation on need for education, Agriculture and gender empowerment reaching about 1500 persons spread across 3 communities in 3 LGAs of Vandeikya, Gwer-East and Makurdi LGAs in Benue. This programme achieved increased understanding of community members on the above mentioned issues and a reduction in stigma, discrimination and misconceptions surrounding widowhood OVC in the target communities.
Outreach on OVC programme in Tse-Ji Mbausu and Tse-Agbo in Vandeikya L GA and Tse-Yakyo in Makurdi LGAs in Benue State.
